Hi Elly - good to see you here - and where in Mass are you from mj? My previous homestate -
I don't have the recipe from the Globe, but I do Brussels Sprouts with Bacon, Balsamic Vinegar and a touch of Brown Sugar and it's the one way I can get DH to eat them! I love them and would eat them ANY old way.
BRUSSELS SPROUTS WITH BACON
In lightly salted water, parboil brussel sprouts in which you have cut an X in the stem end (more evenly cooked)
I put about a tsp of sugar in the cooking water, since someone once told me that it gets rid of the bitterness if any in the brussel sprouts.
When the sprouts are done, remove and drain, and cut in half lengthwise, let sit. While sprouts were cooking, fry a couple of slices of bacon crispy done and remove from pan to cool a bit so you can chop them into small bits.
Leaving bacon grease in saute pan, add halved sprouts into pan along with bacon bits and turn heat back on to medium. When sprouts are well heated through, just before serving, add a splash of balsamic vinegar, some salt and pepper to taste, and a tsp or 2 of brown sugar. Continue cooking the sprouts in this glazing mixture until well blended and coated. Then plate and serve. (I've even used a small splash of real maple syrup when I found I didn't have any brown sugar in the cupboard, and it was great that way, too)
Hope you try this method - it's very good.
