The canned frosting you get is not really made to frost cakes smoothly. You can add powdered sugar and a tablespoon of meringue powder to get it to firm up some however.

A better solution for you might also be to buy Wilton canned frosting which is available in the craft section of any Wal-mart. This can then be flavored by using about 1 teaspoon of flavoring such as strawberry or lemon. To make chocolate just add cocoa powder until you get the flavor you want. Remember that flavors intensify after they set for a while and don't overdo it though!!
