Make-Ahead Lemonade Base and Fruit Variations
Source: Better Homes And Gardens, July 1993

For a refreshing glass of old-fashioned lemonade, in a tall glass stir together 1/2 cup of the make-ahead lemonade base and 1/2 cup cold water. Add ice cubes and serve.

LEMONADE-BASE
2 1/2 c water
1 1/4 c sugar
1/2 tsp finely shredded lemon peel
1 1/4 c lemon juice

For sugar syrup, in a medium saucepan heat and stir water and sugar over medium heat till sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and cool about 20 minutes.

Add lemon peel and lemon juice to the sugar syrup. Pour into a covered jar and chill. Store lemonade base in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Use to make the Lemon Sherbet Float, the Strawberry lemonade slush or the Tropical Lemon Iced Tea.

Makes about 5 cups of lemonade base.

LEMON SHERBET FLOAT (Sippable sherbet with a sweet and tangy lemon taste--):
For each serving, place 1 or 2 small scoops lemon sherbet in a tall glass. Pour 1/2 cup carbonated water over the sherbet. Sprinkle with fresh raspberries or blueberries, if desired. Serve immediately. (187 calories)

STRAWBERRY-LEMONADE SLUSH
For each serving, in a blender container combine 1/2 cup fresh or frozen unsweetened strawberries, 1/3 cup Make-Ahead Lemonade Base, and 1 tablespoon sugar.

Blend till smooth. With blender running, add about 1 cup ice cubes, one at a time, through opening in lid till strawberry mixture becomes slushy. Pour into a tall glass. Garnish slush with a fresh strawberry half, if desired. Serve immediately. (198 calories)

Put 2 Tbsp syrup in bottom of large, tall glass. Add seltzer water, stirring as you pour, to within 2 inches of the lip of the glass. Add one large scoop of very firm ice cream, trying to get it to straddle the lip of glass, yet still submerged in the seltzer to begin reacting with the bubbles to create a foamy head. Top with whipped cream.

Burgundy/LA (10:29:38) : Bring an Extra Ice Chest Filled with Just Ice!

It's wise to bring an extra ice chest filled only with ice. When the ice begins to melt around food and drinks, you can replenish it quickly, avoiding food spoilage, or warm drinks.

Burgundy/LA (10:27:51) : Don't Forget Your Umbrellas!

Large golf umbrellas can really come in handy for a picnic. They work great to block the sun, as well as the rain. When folks lay around for an afternoon nap, just prop the umbrellas around the blankets.

Burgundy/LA (10:25:07) : Extra Table Space for the 4th of July

If you will be eating outside and have little children to feed, try this:

Bring along an ironing board. Set it up on a picnic blanket, to be just about a foot or so from the ground. Little children can sit on the blanket and eat from a "table more their size." Just cover it with a whimsical tablecloth! Use large safety pins to secure it underneath the board.

Burgundy/LA (10:10:50) : Icing Down Drinks for the 4th of July

Need extra refrigerator space to keep drinks cold? Try putting the cans and ice in your washing machine. When the ice melts, the water just drains away!

Fill your garden cart or wheel barrow with cans and ice....then you can just roll it around the picnic!
