Recipe(tried): 4-H County Fair Beefburgers - I'm from Iowa...
Sandwiches and we have Maid Rite eating establishments here. The hamburger is placed in a large pan and cooked slowly, it is chopped up and stirred so that it ends up being quiet a fine "crumb". These are served on plain, white, soft hamburger buns and can be topped with cheese and the usual hamburger condiments. They are messy to eat but good. They are probably seasoned with salt and pepper but otherwise the meat has no other seasoning that I can detect. Years ago while in a 4-H club, the female clubs manned a food booth at the local county fair. These County Fair Beefburgers were served at all hours of the day and the young men who slept in the fair "barns" with their animals ate these for breakfast.
4-H County Fair Beefburgers
5 lbs. hamburger
2 t. chili powder
1 T. salt
Pepper
1/2 cup onions
1 1/2 cups catsup
1/3 cup mustard
1 1/2 cups quick oatmeal
Brown hamburger and drain. Add dry ingredients. Stir in catsup and mustard. S prinkle oatmeal over the top. Place over low heat or in a slow cooker and stir often.
The recipe used at the fair was considerably larger and a big slow cooker was used to keep it hot. I believe the oatmeal was used to "stretch" the hamburger but at the time we thought it was the secret ingredient.
