Hi everyone.
I work at the A&W in Flushing, MI.
Yes, we have the Red sauce.
Yes, there's meat in it.
No, I don't know the exact recipe.
No, we don't sell it.
Here's how I've observed (and made it once or twice without exact measurements, etc.) how to make it:
We put about some meat patties with some water in a pot (big saucepan, probably somewhere between 5-10 gallons), heat it up, add whole tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato juice, and spices (I don't know the measurements, but I know we stock Chili Powder, Paprika, Crushed Red Pepper, Black Pepper, Chopped Onion, Cumin, Salt, and Celery Seed). I know most spices are put into the Coney Sauce (Meat, grease, spices, which we DO sell), but I'm not sure what's in the Red.
I also know that after cooking it all together for awhile and everything is softened, it's all pureed with a hand blender (industrial strength).
Then it's put into somewhere between 10-15 mason jars, more or less, depending on which manager is making it, and stored in the refrigerator until we need to use it.
I don't know if this helps, but if Scott (the current owner) is reading this, i'm in big trouble :P
Stop by and get some on a hot dog, scrape it off, and try and concoct it yourself at home, it's my only suggestion. We're the only A&W that still has the Red sauce, and it's definitely a big selling point.
And I am 100% sure that any other recipe that's on here won't taste exactly like our Red sauce. That's why it's exclusive! :)
Good luck!
