Dear Bill - My grandmother used to make that recipe and we loved it as kids. I've tried to duplicate it years later, and it's pretty close to what I remember.
Ingredients that I use are:
One large size can of whole tomatoes in their juice, I cut the tomatoes into smaller pieces
One small onion, finely diced
butter or margarine, prob. 1/4 stick or so
sugar (about a Tbsp.)
Salt/Pepper to taste
One piece of white bread, cubed
I sautee the onion very well (do not brown)at low heat in the butter or margarine in a medium sized saucepan.
Once the onion is translucent, I add the tomatoes, sugar and salt and pepper. I let this simmer together for 15 minutes or so, just to blend the flavors. At the very end, I add the cubed bread and stir in carefully - I think one piece, but you might want a little more, depending on how you remember yours looking and tasting.
I serve this in little glass side dishes per person, topped with a tiny dab more of butter on the top. You mentioned "creamy", however, my grandmother's recipe did not have cream in it, but I'd think that at the very end, you could also add a small amt. of heavy cream to the mixture, if that's the way your recipe was.
Enjoy - it's the real comfort food!
