CHEESE AND ONION CASSEROLE
Source: the 1956 Good Housekeeping Cook Book
1 cup minced onions
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 cups grated process sharp American cheese (1/2 lb)
1/2 tsp dry mustard
salt and pepper to taste
7 day old white bread slices
2 tbsp butter or margarine
2 cups milk, room temperature
Heat oven to 350 degrees
Saute onion in oil until golden.
Add cheese, dry mustard; salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring, just until cheese is melted; remove from heat.
Spread bread slices with butter.
In 1 1/2 quart casserole, alternate layers of buttered bread and cheese mixture. Pour milk over all.
Bake for 1 hour.
Servings 4
