PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH APPLESAUCE BREAD
2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup applesauce
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Sift dry ingredients together into bowl; set aside.
Cream shortening in another bowl. Add sugar; cream well. Beat in eggs and vanilla; blend in dry ingredients alternately with applesauce. Stir in walnuts. Pour into well-greased 9x5x3-inch baking pan; let rise for 20 minutes.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 55-60 minutes.
Recipe may be doubled. Freeze one loaf for later use.
