Recipe: Pope's Cafeteria Nut Torte (meringue crust with nuts and graham crackers and fruit topping)

3 egg whites
1/8 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. almond extract
3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
2 tbsp. pecan pieces
Sliced bananas or peaches
Whipped cream
Sliced almonds
Cherry halves
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Grease an 8-inch cake pan well.
Beat egg whites and cream of tartar until fluffy.
Sift white and brown sugar together and add slowly to egg whites. Beat until glossy and stiff.
Gently fold in vanilla and almond extract, graham cracker crumbs and pecan pieces. Pour into prepared pan.
Bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes. Cool in pan.
Remove from pan. Top with fruit, then whipping cream, almonds and cherries.
