SPAGHETTI SAUCE AMERICAN STYLE
1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 (16 ounce) can tomatoes, crushed
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 cup Heinz Tomato Ketchup
1 cup water
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
Brown beef, onion and garlic in oil; drain excess fat.
Stir in tomatoes and remaining ingredients. Simmer, uncovered, 45 minutes or until sauce is desired consistency; stir occasionally. Remove bay leaf before serving.
Microwave Directions:
Omit vegetable oil. Crumble beef into a 2-quart casserole. Add onion and garlic. Microwave at HIGH 5 to 6 minutes, stirring once. Drain fat and break up meat. Stir in tomatoes and remaining ingredients. Cover dish with lid or vented plastic wrap. Microwave at HIGH 10 minutes, stirring once. Microwave at MEDIUM (50%) 15 minutes, stirring twice. Let stand 5 minutes; remove bay leaf before serving. Recipe tested in a 650-watt microwave oven.
Makes about 5 cups sauce
