Recipe: St. Louis Red (barbecue sauce)

Toppings - Sauces and Gravies
ST. LOUIS RED

4 cups ketchup
1 (10 ounce) bottle A.1. Steak Sauce
1 (10 ounce) bottle Heinz 57 Sauce
1 1/2 cups apple juice or apple cider
1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/3 cup dark corn syrup
1/3 cup honey
1/4 cup molasses
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder

Combine ingredients in a large, heavy, nonreactive saucepan; bring to a simmer over medium heat. Continue to simmer, uncovered, until richly flavored, 5 minutes, stirring or whisking to prevent scorching. Use right away or transfer to jars, cover, let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate. The sauce will keep for several months.

Makes about 8 cups
