moon cakes are NOT for Chinese New Year
Misc.ADVERTISEMENT
hi, geof,
sorry to cut the line here. But i can tell you that moon cakes are NOT for Chinese New Year at all. (I am a Chinese.) They are for Mid-Autumn Festivel. You can bring a Chinese New Year Cake instead. I will see if I have a recipe for you and post later. But a word of warning. Both moon cakes and new year cakes aren't easy to preapre. As far as I see, anything cookies will do. Chinese believes sweets are good for New Year. Or just bring some Mandarin oranges (the ones that have to be peeled not cut.) as Chinese consider them a symble of good fortune. Just make sure that you bring numbers of 2, 6, 8, or 10, any even numbers but not 4 as it sounds like "death" in Chinese.
hope this helps
