Recipe: Old South Ginger Cakes

Old South Ginger Cakes

This recipe is very good for making gingerbread men or other figures. It's an old family recipe.

1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 cup molasses(Brer Rabbit brand is best)
3 teaspoon baking soda
4 teaspoons ginger
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
(1 teaspoon vinegar in milk will sour it)
5 0r 6 cups flour

Cream shortening and sugar, add molasses, add soda, spices and milk. Add enough flour to form a soft easy to handle dough.

Roll on floured board. Cut and place on greased pans.

Bake at 400 degrees 8 to 10 minutes.
