Recipe: Slovak Nut and Poppyseed Rolls (overnight dough with poppy seed and walnut filling)

Breads - Yeast Breads
SLOVAK NUT AND POPPYSEED ROLLS

4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup canned milk
2 pkg yeast
1 tsp vanilla
1/2# shortening
4 eggs, beaten

POPPYSEED FILLING:
1 lb. ground poppyseed
2 cups sugar
2 Tbsp butter

WALNUT FILLING:
1 1/2 lbs. nuts
2 cups sugar
evaporated milk (just enough to make filling spreadable)

1 egg yolk and a little milk to brush tops of rolls

Sift flour and salt; add vanilla and yeast which has been dissolved in canned milk; cut in shortening. Add eggs and mix ingredients well. Place dough in refrigerator overnight.

Next day on floured surface, roll dough 1/4 inch thick in rectangle form. Spread with nut or poppyseed filling. Roll like a jelly roll. Brush top with yolk and milk.

Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes on slightly greased cookie sheet.
