ISO: cake for a crowd

I am having an open house (May 20th) for my mother's 80th birthday. It needs to be very low budget. The cost of a professionally baked and decorated cake for such an event concerns me. How would I go about making and decorating the cake(s) myself? It is the main food item along with coffee and punch. Thanks in advance for any suggestions/help you can offer!
