As of January 1, 1993, the Slovak Republic has started as an independent nation. The division of the former Czecho-Slovak Federal Republic into two political entities was a constitutional act. On the very first day of her independent existence, Slovakia was recognized by 91 countries around the world; and on January 12, 1993 Slovakia became the United Nations' 180th member.
