ISO: Re: ISO: Slovak recipes
Misc.I am still looking for recipes for the following foods:
Slivkovy' kol c' (prune buns), ryz'ov kas'a (rice porridge) or ryz'ov flameri (rice pudding or custard), nalesniky (pancakes from raw potatoes) -- my Dad thinks this should be malesniky (these were made with grated raw potatoes, salt, and pepper -- no flour or butter; then they were strained, then put into cake pans and baked in the oven -- we always just called them potato pancakes. I don't know what the cooking temperature, etc. would be), and loks'e (flat pancakes from boiled, riced potatoes -- these were much like the Norweigan lefse, but had no lard or margarine in them). I am also looking for the recipe for a bean stew-like dish my Grandmother made from navy beans and salt pork (no cream or saurkraut juice in it, and no vegetables -- just beans and pork). At the end of its cook time she made a gravy base with flour (I remember her mixing this in an old white cup!!) and would add it to the bean mixture. We would sprinkle vinegar into our bowls of beans, then eat it like that. The Slovak name for beans is "fazule" , so the Bean stew recipe may be called ?? fazule _______?? My Grandmother also made a wonderful mushroom soup at Christmas time, made with dried mushrooms her sister would send her from Slovakia every fall. It had no meat, vegetables, saurkraut, or cream in it. She would cut homemade egg noodles into little squares and add the noodles to the soup.
Thank you.
