Re: Request for Slovak Recipes....

Misc.

My grandparents and mother came from Czechoslovakia. My grandmother in
1937 and my grandfather and mother in 1938. I have had a similar experience
with my childhood of watching and learning from my grandmother and her
mother and mother-in-law - which I called my "Babka's". Those wonderful
smells I remember so vividly and recall them every time now when I walk into my
mother's kitchen. My mother was not allowed into her mother's kitchen when
she was young but she has made a very successful catering career from
many recipes that were handed down - although no recipe was ever written
down on paper. Being my mother's only daughter (with 5 sons) I feel fortunate she has enjoyed sharing the kitchen with me - although my husband does not
benefit from my cooking as my grandfather and father did from their wives..

My mother does have a wonderful cookbook. CZECHOSLOVAKIA
COOKBOOK, by Joza Brizova, that she uses frequently. The poppyseed
kolache are a favorite.

My grandmother also died in 1996 and I miss her so. She was very young
when she married and had my mother first with 4 sons to follow. As my
mother aged, my grandmother would tell her, in her thick accent, "You wouldn't be so old if I hadn't had you so young".

This probably does not help you much but, it was a pleasure to read your story.
