Here's the recipe that has been used by my family for many years. I've tried a lot of chocolate pies, but this is still by far my favorite!

2 ounces chocolate, unsweetened
2 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups milk -- scalded
3 eggs -- separated
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 8-inch pie shell -- baked
1/3 cup sugar

Melt butter and chocolate in the top of double boiler.
Mix flour, sugar, salt and add to chocolate.
Gradually add 1 cup milk, stirring until smooth.
Add remaining milk and cook until thick.
Beat egg yolks well.
Add some of hot mixture to eggs, then combine with chocolate mixture.
Cook, stirring constantly for 2 minutes.
Remove from heat and add vanilla.
Pour immediately into cooled pie shell. Cool.
Beat egg whites until stiff.
Slowly beat in the 1/3 cup sugar until very thick and smooth.
Pile lightly and quickly over pie filling so meringue touches edges of crust all around.
Sprinkle with nuts, if desired.
Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees) 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Cool on cake rack before cutting.
