DINNER IN A DISH WITH CHEESE CRESCENTS

1 1/2 cups cut-up celery
4 hard-cooked eggs, cut lengthwise in half
1 (12 oz.) can pork luncheon meat (Spam), cut up, or 2 cups cut-up cooked meat
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup Gold Medal Flour
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
2 cups milk
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
Cheese Crescents (recipe follows)
Heat oven to 425 degrees F.
Arrange celery, eggs and meat in ungreased baking dish, 8x8x2-inches.
Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Blend in flour, salt and pepper. Cook over low heat, stirring until mixture is smooth and bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in milk. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute.
Remove from heat. Stir in onion and green pepper. Pour over meat mixture in baking dish. Place in oven.
While casserole is heating, prepare Cheese Crescents. Arrange 6 crescents on hot mixture in baking dish. Place remaining crescents on ungreased baking sheet.
Bake uncovered casserole 25 to 30 minutes; bake remaining crescents 12 to 15 minutes.
Makes 6 servings
CHEESE CRESCENTS
2 cups Gold Medal Flour*
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup shredded process American cheese (about 4 oz.)
1/3 cup vegetable oil
2/3 cup milk
Measure flour, baking powder and salt into bowl; mix in cheese.
Pour oil and milk into measuring cup, but do not stir. Pour all at once into flour. Stir with fork until mixture cleans side of bowl. Smooth dough by kneading about 10 times without adding flour.
Roll into a circle 1/2-inch thick between two 12-inch squares of waxed paper. Peel off top paper. Cut into 12 wedges. Roll up beginning at wide end. (If not using in recipe above, place crescents on an ungreased baking sheet and bake at 425 degrees F for 12-15 minutes.)
*If using Self-Rising Flour, omit baking powder and salt.
