ONEDIA MOTHER BRANCH'S FRIED BREAD
2 1/2 cups flour
1 envelope yeast
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup margarine or shortening
Vegetable oil (for frying)
Combine all ingredients, except vegetable oil, in a bowl. Knead the dough well. Place the dough in a round pan and let the dough rise until double.
Once it rises, roll it into fingernail-thin slabs. Cut the slabs into 4-inch-by-4-inch pieces. Cut a slit in the center of each square.
Fry each piece in hot oil as you would fry chicken. Make sure the oil is hot enough so that the consistency of the pieces changes quickly.
Serve with powdered sugar, jam and jelly.
Makes 6 servings
