Skillet Braised Pork Chops

4 to 6 pork chops, 3/4 to 1-inch thick
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup water, chicken broth or dry white wine
Brown pork chops in a small amount of butter or corn oil. Add water, chicken broth or white wine. Let simmer on low for 45 minutes. Skim fat from pan juices and serve over pork chops.
Oven Braised: Place in preheated 350 degree F oven and bake for 45 minutes or until chops are tender.
Variations:
Apple:
Substitute 1/2 cup apple juice for water and increase salt to 3/4 teaspon.
Orange-Garlic:
Substitute 1/2 cup orange juice for water and increase salt to 3/4 teaspoon. Add 1 small garlic clove with juice and discard garlic before serving.
