ISO: I have 3 plants - none producing - any suggestions?

I have 3 pineapple plants, the oldest being almost 3 years old. It is about 3 ft tall . I am very interested in getting it to produce fruit. I have been told that I need to put a half apple in it and cover it with a garbage bag to start the production. Does anyone know if this is correct? I am also wondering what time of the year I need to do this? I live just outside of New Orleans and we do have some cold winter here. I bring my plants in for the winter and leave them out for the summer.
