We have recently returned from Oahu where we learned how easy it is to grow pineapple from store bought pineapple.
When you buy it cut or twist the top off. Eat the rest. Trim some of the low foliage off and place in a clear cup of water. Monitor the water level and keep the bottom of the top in water. Within a week or two roots will begin to grow.
When you feel the top has enough roots to grow place the top in a pot of normal potting soil. Press in firmly and water daily for a few weeks. They don't show any transplant shock if kept moist. Water as needed watching the plant for discolor.
When plant outgrows a 10" pot plant in the ground. Dig a little bigger hole than is needed prepare the soil with a little sand depending on your location. Water daily until rooted. The pineapple plant takes 3 years to produce. After 3 years it will produce one fruit per year for three years.
We have used this method many times in Hawaii and South Texas. Don't let them get frosted, cover for safety if weather is threatening. The plant does get very large so don't plant to close to a building or other plants. Happy growing.
