Hi Rebecca, I'm excited! I found this recipe on an old CD I have of recipes that I have from assorted community cookbooks. Unfortunately there is no credit given in the recipes, but this recipe fits your description and I'm hoping its at least very similar to the one you're looking for. I imagine your Mother and Grandmother would be very happy to know you want to recreate this fond food memory. Please let us know if you try it and if you make any changes to it.

JALAPENO PEPPER SAUCE
"This is not hot, to add more heat put in more jalapeno peppers and their seeds."
4 large yellow onions, chopped
2 green bell peppers, chopped
12 very ripe tomatoes, peeled and chopped
6 cloves garlic, put through press
3/4 cup seeded and chopped jalapeno pepper
1 cup sugar
1 cup vinegar
1/2 cup oil
1 cup water
4 tbsp. salt
4 tsp. ground black pepper
Combine all ingredients and cook over low heat, uncovered and stirring occasionally, about 3 hours.
Skim oil that may be floating on top before pouring into storage containers. Refrigerate (or freeze for longer storage).
Makes 3 pints
