Who has ever heard of Pasty except people who live in the upper MidWest primarily Michigan, Wisconsin or Minnesota!! It's definitely a regional specialty.
Thanks, Manyhats for posting this - my childhood version used ground beef, and instead of rutabagas, there were finely chopped or shredded carrots, and the potatoes were chopped into tiny cubes. Served with ketchup or chili sauce as you mentioned, but lots of people serve them with a beef gravy poured over them, which I don't care for - I like the tanginess of the ketchup or chili sauce better.
Sometimes, I remember some spices being in there - like nutmeg or maybe even allspice - just a hint of that.
I think the origins are French Canadian, being so close to the Canada border up there.
I'd love to hear if anyone else has heard of these and has different versions. When we bring my mom's ashes up to Upper Michigan for burial in October, one of the things my sisters and I will do is head for a pasty stand or restaurant. They have stands up there for these, like hot dog stands, but maybe not open in October.
Love, June
