Homemade White Bread

Makes 1 large loaf or 2 smaller ones.

3 1/2 c. hot water
1/2 c. sugar
1 heaping Tbsp. soft shortening
1 Tbsp. salt
2 pkgs. dry yeast
8 c. flour

Combine hot water with sugar, shortening & salt. Cool to lukewarm & stir in yeast. Let stand till foamy, then add 4 c. flour. Keep adding flour till mixture can be kneaded by hand, is not sticky, but nice & smooth. Knead well & put in greased bowl covered with damp towel & set in warm place to rise till doubled in bulk.

Punch down dough & shape into loaf (or rolls).Place in greased 9 by 5 inch loaf pan & let rise again till light. Bake at 400 degrees F, about 20-25 minutes or till done.(Loaf should sound hollow when tapped)
