Recipe: Surprise Burgers with Variations (Hunt's Tomato Sauce recipe, 1960's)

Main Dishes - Beef and Other Meats
SURPRISE BURGERS

This might be titled "How to make hamburgers deliciously different!" "cheese inside and Hunt's Tomato Sauce over all."

1 lb. ground chuck
Salt and pepper
4 slices sharp cheese
Fat for skillet
1 (8 oz.) can Hunt's Tomato Sauce

Form beef into 8 thin patties. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Lay cheese on 4 patties; cover with remaining patties. Pinch edges together to enclose the cheese completely.

Brown on one side in hot greased skillet. Turn and pour tomato sauce over them. Simmer 8 to 10 minutes, basting occasionally.

Serve piping hot with the delicious pan gravy.

VARIATIONS:

- Change the cheese! Crumbled blue cheese makes a perfectly wonderful filling. So does Mozzarella or Swiss. (Sprinkle with crumbled oregano for an Italian flair!)

- Change the filling! Cover half your patties with sweet pickle relish, chopped dill pickle, minced onion or olives. Or spread them with mustard or horseradish.

- The Gourmet Touch! Make 5 finished patties instead of 4. Surround each with a strip of bacon. Cook as above until bacon is crispy. Garnish with 1/2 cup sauteed mushrooms,

- You can make plain hamburger patties the same way. Simply make larger patties and leave out the fillings. The nice, spicy flavor of Hunt's Tomato Sauce alone makes them a deliciously different dish.
