BISQUICK VELVET CRUMB CAKE WITH BROILED TOPPING
1 1/3 cups Bisquick
3/4 cup sugar
3 tbsp. soft shortening
1 egg
3/4 cup milk, divided use
1 tsp. vanilla
Broiled Topping (recipe follows)
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a square pan, 8x8x2-inches or a layer pan, 9x1 1/2-inches.
Mix Bisquick and sugar together. Add shortening, egg and 1/4 cup of milk. Beat hard 1 minute. Stir in gradually remaining 1/2 cup milk; add vanilla. Beat 1/2 minute. Pour into prepared pan.
Bake 35 to 40 minutes. Cover with Broiled Topping while warm. Put about 3-inches under broiler (low heat) until bubbly and brown (3 to 5 minutes).
Especially good served warm.

1/2 cup Wheaties cereal or coconut
1/4 cup chopped nuts
