HEINZ LOVE APPLE PIE
Source: H.J. Heinz Co. Valentine's Day ad campaign, 1999
This recipe was created some 25 years ago in the company's test H.J. Heinz Co. kitchen. Ketchup gives apple pie a spicy flavor in the same way that more common ingredients would, such as nutmeg or cinnamon. It also gives the apples a pink tint. People called tomatoes 'love apples' in the mid-1800s, hence the recipe's name.
1/3 cup Heinz ketchup
2 teaspoons lemon juice
6 cups sliced, peeled cooking apples
1 unbaked, nine-inch pie shell
TOPPING:
2/3 cup flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/3 cup butter, softened
Mix the ketchup and lemon juice; combine with the prepeared apples.
Fill an unbaked, nine-inch pie shell with apples.
FOR THE TOPPING:
Combine flour, sugar and cinnamon. Cut in butter until thoroughly mixed. Sprinkle over apples.
Bake at 425 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes.
