APPLESAUCE COOKIES

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup applesauce
2 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup seedless raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Mix together shortening, sugar and egg. Add applesauce and mix well; set aside.
Combine dry ingredients, raisins and nuts; stir into applesauce mixture.
Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheet.
Bake in moderate oven (375 degrees F) for 10 to 12 minutes.
Makes 5 dozen cookies
