Quick Chili Con Carne California Style

2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 pound ground round
1 large onion, chopped (1 cup)
1 Tablespoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup dry red wine
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1 green pepper, seeded and diced
4 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
1 avocado, peeled, pitted and sliced
4 green onions, sliced

Heat the oil in a large skillet. Add the beef and onion; cook, stirring, until the meat browns slightly. Stir in the chili powder, cumin and salt. Add the wine, tomato sauce and green pepper. Cover; cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes. Arrange the lettuce and avocado on plates, spoon the hot chili over and sprinkle with the onions.

Makes 6 to 8 servings
