Swiss-Style Scalloped Spuds

1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
1/2 cup finely diced onions
1 teaspoon dill weed
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk
6 cups cooked potatoes -- sliced
1 1/2 cups diced cooked ham or sausage
1/2 cup bread crumbs
Toss together shredded Swiss cheese, onions and dill weed. Melt butter in a saucepan; blend in flour and salt. Cook over low heat until mixture is smooth.
Remove from heat and stir in gradually, 2 cups milk; heat to boiling, stirring constantly, and cook about 1 minute. Butter a 13x9-inch baking pan. Layer 3 cups potatoes, half of ham or sausage, half of the preceding cheese mixture and half the sauce. Repeat layers, ending with potatoes on top. Combine 1/2 cup shredded cheese with 1/2 cup bread crumbs and sprinkle over the top. Dot with additional butter and bake in preheated 350 F. oven for 30 to 35 minutes. Allow to stand for 10 minutes before serving.
