Recipe(tried): Buttermilk Puffs

Breads - Breakfast Breads
This is a recipe from my mother and enjoyed by any doughnut lover. They are cakelike doughnut munchkins.

BUTTERMILK PUFFS

4 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp nutmeg (or 1 ea. of nutmeg & cinnamon)
2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup oil
2 eggs, beaten

Mix sugar & eggs; then oil & buttermilk. Add the rest and mix well. Deep fry, dropping dough by the teaspoonful into hot fat (375F), frying a few at a time until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels. When slightly cool, shake in paper bag with cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. Makes several dozen.
